Summary of The Death of Expertise

4.5 . 2023 reviews

Short summary

The Death of Expertise is a non-fiction tidbit that discusses the division between experts and non-experts. It also discusses how education and the Internet have helped to promote a cult of ignorance. As discussed by Tom Nichols, the death of expertise does not mean the literal end of a high level of knowledge and skills that differentiate some people from others in various areas. Instead, it is the rejection of established knowledge. Tom Nichols, author and a professor of National Security Affairs at the U.S. Naval War College, also works as an adjunct professor at the Harvard Extension School. He is a former U.S. Senate aide and a well-known commentator on U.S. politics and national security. In 1995, he became a five-time Jeopardy (an American television game show) champion. The jury of Roseto Degli Abruzzi awarded Tom Nichols the best foreign author prize of 2018 for The Death of Expertise. “Experts are not flawless; they have made awful mistakes with dreadful consequences.” ~ Tom Nichols

Nobody is an expert on everything. No matter our desires, we are limited by time and talent. People thrive when they specialize and develop formal and informal mechanisms and practices that enable them to trust each other in those specializations. We cannot function without acknowledging the limits of our knowledge and trusting in the expertise of others.
Nobody can keep up with the flood of news about everything; if laypeople could absorb all of that information, they wouldn’t need experts in the first place.
Most experts in international affairs would struggle to pass a map test outside their area of specialization, so what’s the big deal if the average person has no idea where Kazakhstan is? No one can master all information. We do our best, and when we need information on something, we consult the best sources we can find. Indisputably, some experts’ complaints about laypeople are biased.

This summary reveals how the average American takes pleasure in dismissing expertise. It will help everyone better understand the experts on whom they rely. This tidbit will also help bridge the divide between experts and lay people — individuals without professional or specialized knowledge in a particular subject.
Specialized knowledge is inherent in every occupation. ~ Tom Nichols
second key point

Individuals who specialize in specific subjects are prone to thinking that others should be as interested in it as they are

Experts are individuals who have mastered specific skills or bodies of knowledge and practice those skills or use them as their principal occupation in life. They are those who have more knowledge on a subject than others. Experts are those we go to when we need advice, education, or solutions in a specific area of human knowledge. They may not be all-knowing, but they are an authority in their field, and their views are considered accurate.

Headway is the answer! No longer accumulating books I never read. With Headway, I initially chose the areas important to me such as productivity, time management, etc., and each day I'm provided several book summaries from which I devote 20 minutes or more each day reading. All of this on my phone! My life has improved with Headway. Truly my most useful app.

In today’s world, we rarely have time. Between our jobs, our families are social obligations, when do we have time to grow and develop ourselves? Headway is an excellent app that gives you that time it gives you those little snippets of information that you need to direct your focus in on your life. Headway gives you a chance to find out the meat of a book that you might want to purchase and read or listen to in-depth without wasting a lot of time trying to figure out is this book for me? I highly recommend the app.

I've gotten multiple books out of the library with the intent to read them, but always have a hard time finding the time. This app has helped me finally be able to get to them. Summarized, yes, and thank goodness too! Just short enough I can finish one on my way picking kids up from school/practice, or while I'm cooking dinner. I can't wait to listen to them over the summer when we visit the beach!

It amazed me! There is the possibility to highlight the most important points of each book and instantly translate unfamiliar vocabulary. With the ability to review the searched words. It's a great way to learn more about English as well. The price is great.

I’m enjoying what I’m learning on headway.each summary comes with quotes at the end which you can save to help you remember key points. You can listen or read, I’ve found that reading puts me to sleep before I can finish but the listening feature keeps me engaged and I can finish in a brief amount of time if not one session.

Exactly what I need! I always have booklist to read, but can't committed enough to finish/start bc of too much pages. Headway is really helpful and concise with their summary. What I love the most is that the essence of the book is well crafted, so I don't only read the key points, but also there's the story and how personality of the author still well shown through the summary. Well done!
