Summary of No Hard Feelings

4.6 . 862 reviews

Short summary

For many years, we've heard whispers about the importance of emotional intelligence, especially in the workplace. No Hard Feelings by Liz Fosslien and Mollie West Duffy demonstrate that it can be learned and improved. This tidbit shows that you have to be reasonably emotional to make outstanding achievements at work. You will learn about the seven new rules of emotions at work and how to analyze your feelings to be more productive and rational. You might think you have no control over your emotions, but that's not true. You might not believe it, but you have a lot more control than you realize right now. All you need to know how to do is tap into that power. Mollie West Duffy is an American author and organizational development expert. Liz Fosslien is an author and a marketing and design consultant. “Emotional dynamics affect our motivation, health, communication, decision making, and more. Yet, most of us ignore these emotions. Why is it that when we think of professionalism, we immediately jump to the idea that we should suppress everything we feel?” ~ Liz Foslien

Small positive actions are excellent ways to build a solid emotional culture at work

Listen the first key point

Would you rather work in a large office where individuals say “hi” cheerfully to each other in the corridor and share moments of euphoria or bitterness from time to time or one where individuals seem happy but feel dead inside?

A workplace with a healthy emotional culture goes a long way in improving working lives. For instance, a study by Kim Cameron, a professor at the University of Michigan's Ross School of Business, found high staff turnover rates in organizations that discourage appreciation and compassion. Then, a study by Barry Staw, a professor at Berkeley, demonstrated that workers tend to make poor decisions if the managers are rude and often overlook vital information.
Small actions of kindness can be especially vital in creating a friendly and productive work environment.
Fortunately, it doesn't take a massive upgrade to support emotional expression in the working environment. Take the case of the Ritz-Carlton Hotel Group's 10/5 rule. Their employees are trained to smile and make eye contact once they stroll within ten feet of someone. They say a friendly hello if they are within five feet. The 10/5 rule has been successfully implemented in hospitals, and it appears to make clients, and even the staff, more cheerful.

Another approach for creating a positive emotional culture is to develop a sense of belonging. This is a significant investment. A 2017 New York Times article noted that one of the highest causes of turnover is when employees don't feel like they fit in at work. Research by Google demonstrated that workers warmly welcomed by their managers on the first day of work are more productive for at least nine months later.

While we have a part to play in developing a healthy emotional culture at work, leaders have a more significant role. This summary shows you how to harness emotions to make positive changes in life.
Every person on a team knows something that no one else knows. That's why teams exist: you need more than one person's set of ideas and skills to solve a problem. ~ Liz Foslien
second key point

Leaders should show helplessness at times and think carefully about how they share. This shows they relate to their employees

In 2008, Howard Schultz came back to Starbucks as CEO following a break for eight years. He cried on the stage in front of his employees to show his human side. Before his return, Starbucks was having a hard time. They were not making many sales daily. Schultz, who grew up poor, knew that his staff was frightened of what was to come. So, he chose to let out a human emotion that many workers, not to mention CEOs, don’t often do in front of their colleagues.

Headway is the answer! No longer accumulating books I never read. With Headway, I initially chose the areas important to me such as productivity, time management, etc., and each day I'm provided several book summaries from which I devote 20 minutes or more each day reading. All of this on my phone! My life has improved with Headway. Truly my most useful app.

In today’s world, we rarely have time. Between our jobs, our families are social obligations, when do we have time to grow and develop ourselves? Headway is an excellent app that gives you that time it gives you those little snippets of information that you need to direct your focus in on your life. Headway gives you a chance to find out the meat of a book that you might want to purchase and read or listen to in-depth without wasting a lot of time trying to figure out is this book for me? I highly recommend the app.

I've gotten multiple books out of the library with the intent to read them, but always have a hard time finding the time. This app has helped me finally be able to get to them. Summarized, yes, and thank goodness too! Just short enough I can finish one on my way picking kids up from school/practice, or while I'm cooking dinner. I can't wait to listen to them over the summer when we visit the beach!

It amazed me! There is the possibility to highlight the most important points of each book and instantly translate unfamiliar vocabulary. With the ability to review the searched words. It's a great way to learn more about English as well. The price is great.

I’m enjoying what I’m learning on headway.each summary comes with quotes at the end which you can save to help you remember key points. You can listen or read, I’ve found that reading puts me to sleep before I can finish but the listening feature keeps me engaged and I can finish in a brief amount of time if not one session.

Exactly what I need! I always have booklist to read, but can't committed enough to finish/start bc of too much pages. Headway is really helpful and concise with their summary. What I love the most is that the essence of the book is well crafted, so I don't only read the key points, but also there's the story and how personality of the author still well shown through the summary. Well done!
