Short summary

What causes depression and anxiety? What is happening in your life? Is there anything hurting you that you might want to change? Johann Eduard Hari is a Swiss-English writer and journalist. Across the world, Hari discovered social scientists who were uncovering the real causes of depression and anxiety — and they are mostly not in our brains, but in the way we live today. Hari’s journey took him from the people living in the tunnels beneath Las Vegas, to an Amish community in Indiana, to an uprising in Berlin — all showing in vivid and dramatic detail these new insights. They lead to solutions radically different from the ones we have been offered up until now.

Everything that causes an increase in depression also causes an increase in anxiety, and the other way round

Anxiety and depression rise and fall together. According to professor Robert Kohlenberg, the data are indicating that the two are not that distinct. In practice, the diagnosis of depression and anxiety overlap. Sometimes, one part is more pronounced than the other — you might have panic attacks this month and be crying a lot next month. But the idea that they are separate in the way that (say) having pneumonia and having a broken leg are separate isn’t borne out of evidence. In fact, the National Institutes of Health — the main body funding medical research in the United States — has stopped funding studies that present depression and anxiety as different diagnoses. Depression and anxiety are not identical but they are twinned. They are like cover versions of the same song by different bands.

We have been systematically misinformed about what depression and anxiety are. The conventional views are that they are due to a malfunctioning brain and the solution is to take antidepressant drugs that repair your brain chemistry. These pills are all around us today. Some 1 in 5 U.S. adults are taking at least 1 drug for a psychiatric problem. Nearly 1 in 4 middle-aged women in the U.S. is taking antidepressants at any given time. Around 1 in 10 boys at American high schools are being given a powerful stimulant to make them focus. Addiction to legal and illegal drugs is now so widespread that the life expectancy of white men is declining for the first time in the entire peacetime history of the United States.

These effects have radiated out across the Western world. The Western world is literally awash with antidepressant drugs. For example, as you read this, 1 in 3 French people is taking a legal psychotropic drug such as an antidepressant, while the UK has almost the highest use in all of Europe. When scientists test the water supply of Western countries, they always find it laced with antidepressants, because so many of us are taking them and excreting them that they simply can’t be filtered out of the water we drink every day. We’ve accepted that a huge number of the people around us are so distressed that they feel they need to take a powerful chemical every day to keep themselves together.

In Lost Connections, you will find references to scientific studies which challenge conventional views about depression and anxiety. You will find that the primary cause of the rising depression and anxiety is largely in our world and the way we are living in it. There are at least 9 proven causes of depression and anxiety, and many of them are rising all around us, causing us to feel radically worse.

There are two types of antidepressants — the real antidepressants and the chemical antidepressants. The latter offers a temporary escape that leads to more pain eventually. The former provides a true path out of pain. It is not something you buy, or swallow. It challenges our current explanations of the causes of depression and anxiety, opens our eyes to the real causes, and provides permanent solutions to these problems.
second key point

The biological sciences have prioritized profit over healing in the treatment of depression and anxiety

Big Pharma and most doctors spread the same message about depression and anxiety — the problem is in your head. It is a chemical imbalance. Your broken machinery needs to be fixed. Then, they hook you up on antidepressants. This has made them over $100 billion to date. This diagnosis is heavily flawed. Yet, it persists because it is profitable for the drug companies.

Headway is the answer! No longer accumulating books I never read. With Headway, I initially chose the areas important to me such as productivity, time management, etc., and each day I'm provided several book summaries from which I devote 20 minutes or more each day reading. All of this on my phone! My life has improved with Headway. Truly my most useful app.

In today’s world, we rarely have time. Between our jobs, our families are social obligations, when do we have time to grow and develop ourselves? Headway is an excellent app that gives you that time it gives you those little snippets of information that you need to direct your focus in on your life. Headway gives you a chance to find out the meat of a book that you might want to purchase and read or listen to in-depth without wasting a lot of time trying to figure out is this book for me? I highly recommend the app.

I've gotten multiple books out of the library with the intent to read them, but always have a hard time finding the time. This app has helped me finally be able to get to them. Summarized, yes, and thank goodness too! Just short enough I can finish one on my way picking kids up from school/practice, or while I'm cooking dinner. I can't wait to listen to them over the summer when we visit the beach!

It amazed me! There is the possibility to highlight the most important points of each book and instantly translate unfamiliar vocabulary. With the ability to review the searched words. It's a great way to learn more about English as well. The price is great.

I’m enjoying what I’m learning on headway.each summary comes with quotes at the end which you can save to help you remember key points. You can listen or read, I’ve found that reading puts me to sleep before I can finish but the listening feature keeps me engaged and I can finish in a brief amount of time if not one session.

Exactly what I need! I always have booklist to read, but can't committed enough to finish/start bc of too much pages. Headway is really helpful and concise with their summary. What I love the most is that the essence of the book is well crafted, so I don't only read the key points, but also there's the story and how personality of the author still well shown through the summary. Well done!
