Summary of Just Work

4.5 . 233 reviews

Short summary

Injustice and inequality are cancerous to our society. These phenomena disrupt the power balance, add hostility to the world, and corrupt our minds and souls. Inevitably, they extend to our professional life, affecting everything from our mental health and performance to the profitability and success of the company. Luckily, Kim Scott describes how we can work together to create a more fair and inclusive world in her book Just Work. Kim Scott is the author of the revolutionary New York Times bestseller Radical Candor and was a CEO coach at Dropbox, Qualtrics, and Twitter. She was also a faculty member at Apple University and led AdSense, YouTube, and DoubleClick teams at Google. Along with Trier Bryant, she co-founded Just Work to help others implement ethical guidelines in their work environments. She digs into her rich professional experience and breaks down particular occurrences of injustice in the workplace with practical advice on addressing them according to a person’s role in those scenarios. “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” ~ Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

How different would our lives be if there were no injustice? Perhaps you've wondered about this before or maybe dismissed such an idea because it seemed too good to be true.

While the author does not answer this philosophical question, she provides instruction and specific examples on making the world better by locating, analyzing, and fighting injustice.

Mainly relating to workplace ethics, the book dives into the unfairness behind various work processes in most organizations. To transform these processes, Kim Scott offers a new approach to managing organizations called Just Work: a healthy space where the employees can unlock their full potential and enhance their creativity and productivity.

No employee works well in a toxic environment, especially underrepresented people in non-inclusive workplaces. When you have to put up with bias, prejudice, or even bullying every day, there is very little energy left to put into achieving goals and meeting deadlines. After all, we all work better and are more motivated if we feel appreciated.

According to a McKinsey study, workplaces with inequality and mostly homogenous staff, like all-white teams, are less productive and come up with fewer creative solutions than heterogeneous teams with various cultures and genders represented.
If you want to change society, start with yourself.
“What can I do?” — you might ask. The answer is simple: you can change the world. No matter your position, social group, or skin color, you have the power to tip the scales in favor of the good. You may be wondering how you can do that, and the answers are all here; the book provides valuable insights for all sides of unjust situations. So, no matter what role you play in a particular unfair scenario, you will know how to react and what to do to minimize the possibility of it happening again.

Moreover, despite not being a novelty, the inequality and injustice question has become more profound in recent years, spurred by the BlackLivesMatter and MeToo movements. The events preceding these movements made the unfairness so visible that it's no longer possible to ignore it. And taking into account all the current economic, social, and environmental issues, the need to maintain just and equal work environments is greater than ever, as workers are more vulnerable than they've ever been.
second key point

Injustice in the workplace: roles and responsibilities

The three leading causes of injustice in the workplace are bias, prejudice, and bullying. In short, bias denotes an unconscious impulse to jump to conclusions, prejudice implies doing the same but consciously, and bullying is acting on it and being outright mean. Each of these causes requires a specific response.

Headway is the answer! No longer accumulating books I never read. With Headway, I initially chose the areas important to me such as productivity, time management, etc., and each day I'm provided several book summaries from which I devote 20 minutes or more each day reading. All of this on my phone! My life has improved with Headway. Truly my most useful app.

In today’s world, we rarely have time. Between our jobs, our families are social obligations, when do we have time to grow and develop ourselves? Headway is an excellent app that gives you that time it gives you those little snippets of information that you need to direct your focus in on your life. Headway gives you a chance to find out the meat of a book that you might want to purchase and read or listen to in-depth without wasting a lot of time trying to figure out is this book for me? I highly recommend the app.

I've gotten multiple books out of the library with the intent to read them, but always have a hard time finding the time. This app has helped me finally be able to get to them. Summarized, yes, and thank goodness too! Just short enough I can finish one on my way picking kids up from school/practice, or while I'm cooking dinner. I can't wait to listen to them over the summer when we visit the beach!

It amazed me! There is the possibility to highlight the most important points of each book and instantly translate unfamiliar vocabulary. With the ability to review the searched words. It's a great way to learn more about English as well. The price is great.

I’m enjoying what I’m learning on headway.each summary comes with quotes at the end which you can save to help you remember key points. You can listen or read, I’ve found that reading puts me to sleep before I can finish but the listening feature keeps me engaged and I can finish in a brief amount of time if not one session.

Exactly what I need! I always have booklist to read, but can't committed enough to finish/start bc of too much pages. Headway is really helpful and concise with their summary. What I love the most is that the essence of the book is well crafted, so I don't only read the key points, but also there's the story and how personality of the author still well shown through the summary. Well done!
