Short summary
Rachel Hollis has seen it too often: women not living into their full potential. They feel a tugging on their hearts for something more, but they’re afraid of embarrassment, of falling short of perfection, of not being enough.
In “Girl, Stop Apologizing”, #1 New York Times bestselling author and founder of a multimillion-dollar media company, Rachel Hollis sounds a wake-up call. She knows that many women have been taught to define themselves in light of other people — whether as wife, mother, daughter, or employee — instead of learning how to own who they are and what they want. With a challenge to women everywhere to stop talking themselves out of their dreams, Hollis identifies the excuses to let go of, the behaviors to adopt, and the skills to acquire on the path to growth, confidence, and believing in yourself.
“I believe we can change the world. But first, we’ve got to stop living in fear of being judged for who we are.” ~ Rachel Hollis
Naturally, humans structure their lifestyles, decisions, and choices to conform to the norms or unwritten rules that govern their environment. We set out to become great and live our lives as we deem fit until we get confronted by various factors that remind us of the disparity in between our goals and sociocentric beliefs. As women, we take the gas off the pedal as we come to understand that living the dream is not for the faint-hearted.
And so, the author asserted that goal-getting women have learned to tune out unwanted comments that question their will to choose to be happy. They have realized that having dreams is the only way to stay alive and that they do not need to justify their actions or seek approval.
Well-behaved women seldom make history. ~ Laurel Thatcher Ulrich
However, a large percentage of women have found this bold and unflinching approach scary. As such, they retire their dream, and instead, base their happiness on the happiness of the people around them. By so doing, they relegate their happiness for others, and could often remunerate on the possibilities they had passed on. This simple analogy is a typical case of “what if” that the author revealed as the first stage of self-discovery.
There are lots of battles that come with taking the initiative to do what makes you happy.
In an attempt to establish the reason for our susceptibility to settle for less, Rachel Hollis explained that societal norms and our propensity to crave attention are vital factors. In many societies, the yardstick for judging women is how happy our kids and husbands appear, or how early we could get a man to walk us down the aisle. In essence, we have wired our lives to live by these yardsticks, and so, we forego our dreams just to have a good standing in our society’s scorecard.
If you are yet to realize that there is something wrong with the life you have chosen, or you indulge in denial that has stopped you from realizing how much you have sacrificed, then you are far from redemption. In contrast, it is only when you start to ask yourself the important questions that you begin to see you for who you are.
Awareness is just the first stage of breaking free.
The author, while drawing from her exploits, listed three essential other stages that you should consider.
1. Rid yourself of the excuses that have held you back for so long. • 2. Adopt habits and behaviors that would set you up for a better life. • 3. Acquire skills that could increase your chances of winning.
second key point
Rid yourself of the excuses that have held you back for this long
Excuses are the perfect cushion for our failure to dare for more. We, as women, often rely on false facts, figures, myths, and social status quo when convincing ourselves that we are not just the type that could make things happen. The first steps to finding your calling entail that you unravel these excuses, see through them and strip them of their power over you.
In this empowering guide, Rachel Hollis encourages women to break free from the habit of constantly apologizing for their ambitions and dreams. With a shame-free approach, she provides a practical plan for embracing and achieving personal goals. Through personal anecdotes and actionable advice, Hollis inspires readers to overcome self-doubt, embrace their worth, and unapologetically pursue their dreams. This book serves as a powerful tool for women seeking to unleash their full potential and live a life without regrets.

Headway is an excellent app that gives you that time it gives you those little snippets of information that you need to direct your focus in on your life. I've gotten multiple books out of the library with the intent to read them, but always have a hard time finding the time. This app has helped me finally be able to get to them. Summarized, yes, and thank goodness too! Just short enough I can finish one on my way picking kids up from school/practice, or while I'm cooking dinner. I can't wait to listen to them over the summer when we visit the beach!

It amazed me! There is the possibility to highlight the most important points of each book and instantly translate unfamiliar vocabulary. With the ability to review the searched words. It's a great way to learn more about English as well. The price is great.

I’m enjoying what I’m learning on headway.each summary comes with quotes at the end which you can save to help you remember key points. You can listen or read, I’ve found that reading puts me to sleep before I can finish but the listening feature keeps me engaged and I can finish in a brief amount of time if not one session.

Exactly what I need! I always have booklist to read, but can't committed enough to finish/start bc of too much pages. Headway is really helpful and concise with their summary. What I love the most is that the essence of the book is well crafted, so I don't only read the key points, but also there's the story and how personality of the author still well shown through the summary. Well done!
