Short summary
Have you ever got cold feet while discussing a touchy subject, especially the one that could expose your emotional frailties? Everyone has that feeling, and that's the reason this guide was created. Here, Douglas Stone, Bruce Patton, and Sheila Heen, explain how to master the art of navigating the pitfalls of difficult conversations.
After finishing this summary, you will understand how to deal with your emotions, particularly irritation and anger, other people’s feelings, and master effective communication strategies.
The authors all live in Boston, Massachusetts, as at the time they wrote the book. They're all lecturers at Harvard Law School, and also take courses and write research papers in the Harvard Negotiation Project, the world's foremost negotiation research center. Bruce Patton also co-authored another negotiation book titled Getting to Yes.
“These are the skills we all can use to make a marriage more enjoyable and durable and to make relations between parents and teenagers something far better than a war zone. These skills can heal the wounds that keep so many of us apart.” ~ Roger Fisher
Difficult conversations should not always be an ugly experience

While describing difficult discussions as an everyday challenge, the authors likened uncomfortable conversations to holding a hand grenade. If you are too scared to hurt other people’s feelings, you could hold on to an unpinned grenade. Alternatively, you could throw it tactfully or emotionlessly without remorse. Regardless of the way you choose to go about this, casualties are inevitable.
Overly suppressed or displayed emotions could turn a simple altercation into months and years of conflict.
However, if you look closely at every ugly experience you have had while engaging in a difficult conversation, like requesting for a pay rise, taking your children out of their stance to do the complete opposite of your instructions, firing an employee, and so on, you will discover that they all obey the same structure. Decoding this structure is vital to how much control you have in these situations.
We need advice that is more powerful than “Be diplomatic” or “Try to stay positive.” ~ Douglas Stone, Bruce Patton, Sheila Heen
In this guide, you will see the three conversations embedded in every difficult conversation.
• The first, which is the “what happened conversation,” relates to the initial bickering by the opposing parties on the true source of the disagreement. Here, there is an intense or subtle discussion on what could have been done better, who is to blame, what is the hidden truth in every word spoken. • The second conversation is “the feelings conversation,” where we dissect our true feelings, decide to hide them, confront them, or expose them. • The identity conversation, which is the last, is an internal debate on the consequences of the disagreement or the outcome of the difficult discussion. In this stage, we examine the impacts of our words and reactions and those of the second party on our image, future, and well-being.
Difficult Conversations will help you become more relaxed and knowledgeable in terms of speaking to people. Everybody should have a chance to build strong relationships with others and be able to communicate all ideas and opinions without fear of being confronted. This summary is your opportunity to become a conversation master who makes people understand your words.

Arguments stop us from exploring other people’s side of the story
Arguing in itself is not the problem, as every human has a unique way of seeing things. From time to time, there is no way our ideas won’t clash with others — we argue over the best place to shop, the best movie, or the right color to paint the room.
"Difficult Conversations" offers practical guidance on navigating challenging discussions with empathy and effectiveness. Drawing on their expertise in negotiation and communication, the authors provide strategies for addressing sensitive topics, managing emotions, and finding common ground. Through real-life examples and insightful advice, this book equips readers with the tools to engage in constructive dialogue, fostering understanding and resolving conflicts in personal and professional relationships.

Headway is the answer! No longer accumulating books I never read. With Headway, I initially chose the areas important to me such as productivity, time management, etc., and each day I'm provided several book summaries from which I devote 20 minutes or more each day reading. All of this on my phone! My life has improved with Headway. Truly my most useful app.

In today’s world, we rarely have time. Between our jobs, our families are social obligations, when do we have time to grow and develop ourselves? Headway is an excellent app that gives you that time it gives you those little snippets of information that you need to direct your focus in on your life. Headway gives you a chance to find out the meat of a book that you might want to purchase and read or listen to in-depth without wasting a lot of time trying to figure out is this book for me? I highly recommend the app.

I've gotten multiple books out of the library with the intent to read them, but always have a hard time finding the time. This app has helped me finally be able to get to them. Summarized, yes, and thank goodness too! Just short enough I can finish one on my way picking kids up from school/practice, or while I'm cooking dinner. I can't wait to listen to them over the summer when we visit the beach!

It amazed me! There is the possibility to highlight the most important points of each book and instantly translate unfamiliar vocabulary. With the ability to review the searched words. It's a great way to learn more about English as well. The price is great.

I’m enjoying what I’m learning on headway.each summary comes with quotes at the end which you can save to help you remember key points. You can listen or read, I’ve found that reading puts me to sleep before I can finish but the listening feature keeps me engaged and I can finish in a brief amount of time if not one session.

Exactly what I need! I always have booklist to read, but can't committed enough to finish/start bc of too much pages. Headway is really helpful and concise with their summary. What I love the most is that the essence of the book is well crafted, so I don't only read the key points, but also there's the story and how personality of the author still well shown through the summary. Well done!
